Gymnosperm
A gymnosperm has cones, a male cone and a female cone.
Inside the scales are the reproductive parts.
The axle inside is only to hold it together.
Cones are wind pollinated and that is why
they are not colorful or fragrant;
they don't have to attract pollinators.
Each scale can create its own seed if it is pollinated,
and if the seed ends up in soil,
it can become a tree (or shrub or whatever it will become).

Dear Josie,
Here's hoping that your careful pollination project blows all around your class, brushing against people's hairstyles, spreading PLANT LOVE everywhere. Then, if by chance it blows out the window, I hope it gets to whisper little shared secrets with all the flowers and pine cones it passes, before being carried by a furry animal through a door flap to a new family. I hope they read it closely, discuss it with their friends, and make saffron rice that night in honor of its message. Furthermore, I hope it gets so sticky with honey (from when they set it on their counter top), that it ends up sticking to the outside of the garbage truck, like a poster, so that more and more people can see it, as the truck drives around. Oh...Also, I hope lots of people see it here on your family's webpage and are properly wowed by what a super job you did on it! Love, Anna
