1. An e-mail from Simon, sent yesterday morning while he and two other kids were spending half an hour home alone -- the brief window between the time I had to leave for a meeting and the start of school (delayed two hours due to icy roads):

2. An intriguing assortment of items from every room in the house, heaped at the bottom of the stairs when I returned from said meeting. The pile included three bike helmets, a tennis racket, a snare drum, a blue foam tube used for yoga, three sneakers, a pair of bright blue tights, black furry batwings from a long-ago Halloween costume, a toy firefighter, several used up twist-ties, and a Buzz Lightyear toy wrapped entirely in masking tape. Photographic evidence available upon request.
3. Simon's shattered bed:

This occurred during an afterschool play date with Rory, who had come over to work on a school project about Worm Predators. After they finished making the pieces for their Worm Predator board game out of play-dough, they vanished upstairs. The sickening thud came fifteen minutes later. Fortunately nobody was hurt. Also, we have hated this bed since the day we brought it home from Ikea (it lurched out from under us as soon as we got it assembled and attempted to lie upon it), and we had another futon frame stashed away in the basement. No harm no foul!
