Hillman City buries a gift for future South Enders
The Hillman City time capsule project was a great success.
The Hillman City time capsule project was a great success.
An enthusiastic crowd gathered at Rainier Avenue Church on Saturday morning, Feb. 2, for a party to celebrate the creation of the Hillman City time capsule. The capsule will be installed in the Rainier Avenue Church later this year, and Saturday's party presented a last chance for people to put a bit of themselves into the project with their favorite things, thoughts and momentos. Above, from left to right, Bronwen Street, Simon Kidde, Maggie Travis, Menna Street, Ioan Street, and Josie Kidde display some of the stuff they brought for the time capsule. In addition to the essays, toys, books and clothing seen above, people donated a spinning hub-cap belt buckle, a glass slipper, and photographs of Hillman City by a teenage photographer associated with Youth in Focus. The project was spearheaded by the Rainier Valley Historical Society. The focus was on collecting a clutch of treasures representing the past and present people of Hillman City. The capsule is scheduled to be opened in 2057.
