Throw Down in the Sound!

Last week Josie's rollerderby league had its monthly practice bout -- last Friday of every month, folks! Friends and family welcome!

We like the practice bouts because they let you take pictures, and you can get in a little closer than you can at a real bout. Here are the jammers taking off:

Remember, the jammers are the ones with stars on their helmets, who score points by passing the pack. Half the pack is trying to block them, and the other half is trying to help them through. Here Energizer Bunny (green tutu) is about to get flung forward by her teammate Sonic Pez (green helmet). Josie is right behind her.

Last night the girls took it up a notch, with a public event called Throw Down in the Sound, where they were essentially the opening act for the Derby Outcasts (men!) and the Northwest All-Stars (including several of our favorite Rat City Rollergirls).

It was a little intimidating, to be honest -- we never had hundreds of strangers paying $15 to watch Josie's soccer games, after all. The Everett Skate Deck is slightly bigger than the Lynnwood Bowl & Skate, but with the bleachers & beergarden & scoring table taking up so much of the floor, the track itself seemed smaller than usual. Certainly too small to contain the adult players, who kept flying off into the front rows.

The Derby Brats did great -- here you can see the Evil Angels' jammer pulling away in front of the pack. Josie is the tall one in the middle blocking the Poison Skid'les jammer -- you can just see her silver helmet sticking up above the others.

All in all it was a terrific evening. The Evil Angels emerged triumphant, despite a Poison Skid'les rally late in the second period. We got to see Swede Hurt and Anya Heels in action. Simon got to try Guitar Hero in between bouts. We made $75 selling our awesome rollerskate cookies. Only one player had to be hauled off the track on a gurney.

The downside? Blisters.

Ah well, faut souffrir pour etre rollergirl...
