Here Is What Happens When You Go Skating and Leave Your Cat-Empathic, Computer-Savvy, Initiative-Taking Kid at Home for an Hour

What's with all these signs on the telephone poles? Another lost dog?

Why, no! It's a heartfelt plea by a compassionate seven-year-old, on behalf of a pair of bored five-month-old kittens who have scampered and burrowed their way through our basement, plumbed the depths of our closets and dresser drawers, and made short work of the kitchen cabinets and couch cushions.

In less than an hour, the first contribution arrives: an empty case of Two-Buck Chuck left on the doorstep like a baby at an orphanage.

Hours of fun!

Tomorrow we'll try them on the waxed cardboard vegetable bin that appeared on the porch while we were out to dinner. We think the interlocking four-flap lid will be a big hit.

We'd like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who heeded the call and donated their empty boxes to the cause of feline entertainment. You have made two kittens very happy and a small boy very proud.
